Popeye the Sailor Man
Popeye the sailor man was created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1929. The Popeye story lines are usually very simple as they often involve a bad guy hitting on Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl, Popeye gets beaten, and then eats his spinach and overcomes the bad guy and saves his girlfriend. Popeye is one of the most recognizable characters in animation as he often has a corn cob pies, muscular forearms, a speech impediment (which was common in early animated characters), and of course his love of spinach which gave him super human like strength. Popeye the sailor man is one of the most popular characters ever created as he still has a daily comic strip in most major newspapers even after nearly 80 years since his initial creation.
